Drone Sighting at NYC Area Airport

Drone Scare Shuts Down Newark

Liberty International Airport

Tuesday Evening

One small drone shut down Newark Liberty International Airport Tuesday evening this week.
Arriving planes were diverted for an hour after the drone was spotted by 2 different arriving pilots.
This is just one month after a drone sighting at Gatwick Airport in London.

This latest encounter proves just how vulnerable the air-travel system is to the easily accessible,
inexpensive drones. This should get some discussions going about preventing this from happening
in the future. FAA laws need to be changed so that law enforcement has more jurisdiction in the air.
In a statement, the Port Authority said “the presence of drone activity near major airports is a serious
threat to public safety and can cause significant disruption to flight operations, impacting thousands
of passengers.”
There are FAA rules and regulations that pertain to drone flying near airports. The only problem is
that criminals don’t follow rules and regulations.
Detecting and jamming the drone radio signals is all well and good but laws will need to be changed
so that danger causing drones can be jammed and brought down.
According to this article, the police are prohibited from shooting them down.
